Fibroids Q & A
Are fibroids cancerous?
Fibroids are rarely cancerous: They’re benign 99% of the time. Fibroids are small, fibrous tumors that grow and develop inside the uterine wall. In most cases, fibroids remain very small and are only detected during a pelvic exam performed by your OB/GYN provider at Rodeo Drive Women's Health Center.
There are cases, however, when fibroids continue to grow. Once they grow larger, they cause pain, discomfort, or irregular and sometimes heavy vaginal bleeding that can manifest in a variety of ways, including:
- Lower-back pain
- Pelvic pain
- Painful intercourse
- Painful menstrual cycles
- Irregular menstrual periods
If any of these symptoms occur without warning, schedule an appointment with your doctor at Rodeo Drive Women’s Health Center so they can get to the root of your problem.
How are fibroids treated?
Many fibroids develop and then disappear before any treatment is needed. If they continue to grow, however, your healthcare provider can offer several treatment options that may shrink the fibroids and reduce your discomfort, including:
- Anti-inflammatory pain medications
- Gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonists
- Uterine artery embolization
- Antihormonal agents
- Conservative surgical therapies
If your fibroids continue to develop and grow larger than normal, your doctor may recommend a hysterectomy. Your OB/GYN provider will only consider a hysterectomy if you are positive that you don't want to have any more children. If you want to discuss your treatment options, call the providers at Rodeo Drive Women's Health Center and schedule an appointment.
Do fibroids cause any other symptoms?
Many fibroids are small enough that they cause no symptoms at all. Others can grow larger than normal and begin to disrupt how the uterus functions. Every woman reacts differently, so your symptoms are unique to the size of your fibroids and exactly where they're located. A few of the most common symptoms women experience include:
- Frequent urination
- Pelvic pain with or without sexual intercourse
- Lower-back pain
- Painful periods
- Irregular menstrual periods
- Spotting between periods
You may experience some or all of the symptoms in varying degrees of severity. If you do experience any of the symptoms and want to find out what’s causing your discomfort, contact Rodeo Drive Women's Health Center to get the answers you need.
